Rewind: Definitely Maybe
Let’s not forget one of the most influential albums of the Britpop movement, Oasis’ “Definitely Maybe.”
Noel Gallagher feels its one of their their best albums. In an interview on the documentary, “Live Forever,” he said,
“I personally think “Definitely Maybe” is a much better album [than ‘Morning Glory’]. And for the life a me, I can’t understand… why, in this country in particular, that when people were going to buy “Morning Glory”, they didn’t buy “Definitely Maybe”.”
This album is what made Oasis who they are. Oasis is known as the working class Manchester boys who struck gold as one of rock’s most influential bands of all times.
Noel Gallagher penned the album, many of the songs written in a storeroom where he worked.
The songs are simple and any person can relate to them.
The album has a strong start with “Rock ‘n’ Roll Star,” the song saying you should live your life doing what you want. The song is full of guitar riffs and has the wholesome rock ‘n roll image everyone imagines.
This album’s most popular song is “Live Forever.” It is simply “about living forever, ain’t it?” according to Liam Gallagher. This song was written for the Mum Gallagher. The song is most famous because of its catchy melody, great lyrics and memorable chorus.
Other highlights include, “Supersonic,” a song written only in a half-hour in the back room of a recording studio. There’s no story behind the odd lyrics, everything was a result of gin, tonic and Noel’s imagination. The song was recorded in a mere day and became an instant classic.
“It’s just too slow, that’s what got me about it,” guitarist, Gem Archer said.
“Shakermaker” is also a unique song written about every day life things. The song is named after a childhood toy that Noel had. The second single off this album, it has an intense guitar and drum intro followed by Liam’s unique, nasally vocals. The lyrics touch on Noel’s previous job and old friend, Mr. Sifter at his favorite record shop.
If you are ever in need of a happy, true Rock ‘N Roll album, “Definitely Maybe,” is the album for you. It’s carefree and encourages you to go out and live life. It’s no surprise after this album that Oasis broke into mega-super-stardom.
