Radiohead Comes Out On Top
It’s hard to imagine that giving away music ultimately makes an album… successful?
Radiohead revealed their 2 year-long projects to the U.K. on Oct. 10, 2007 (the USA on Jan. 1, 2008) in a unique fashion. The band just ended their contract with EMI and decided to release the material not only as a physical CD and on iTunes, but for download off radiohead.com … for free.
Fans could have the music or pay whatever they wanted. Although no financial figure has been released, over the weekend at the You are in Control Conference in Reykjavik, Iceland it was announced “In Rainbows” sold a total of 3 million copies.
The 3 million includes downloads from iTunes, Amazon and other outlets, radiohead.com, physical CDs and boxed sets.
The album not only sold 3 million copies, but entered both the UK and USA charts at number one.
Now … that’s loyalty.. or smart business.
